FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

What is working memory and why is it important?

Working memory is an essential cognitive function necessary for a wide-range of tasks related to attention and focus. It is the ability to keep information in your mind for several seconds, manipulate it, and use it in your thinking. It is central to concentration, problem solving, and impulse control. Poor working memory is the source of many problems related to attention and is often linked to ADHD, and other learning disabilities.

Why brain training instead of tutor?

Tutors basically re-teach the content that was not absorbed at school. They deliver this same instruction in similar or new formats and/or in one to one or smaller groups than in school -- most of the time tutoring results in modest progress. However there is no research that shows any long term, enduring gains from tutoring. Advances in brain science show that brain training gets to the root causes of learning problems and stimulates brain development that is lasting.

Why a clinician versus a “coach”?

When managing brain training programs for families at home, the software does the heavy lifting, so when it comes to choosing a provider, consider these questions:

  • Which provider is best to help you keep you or your child motivated?
  • Which provider can make diagnostic decisions if needed?
  • Which provider can recommend other remedial therapies if necessary or determine if you or your child would best benefit from services in our office as opposed to at home?

A clinician is best qualified to make these and other important determinations. Oversight from a professional who has experience with cognition, working memory, and executive function is pivotal. Clinicians are qualified to assess, diagnosis, create and implement treatment plans.

Is brain training a substitute for medication?

No, it is not. In the case of users on ADHD medication, brain training is a complementary intervention. Stimulant medication and brain training impact the brain in different ways. Medications will have effects that brain training does not, particularly regarding hyperactivity. Brain training will also, in many cases, have effects that cannot be achieved by medication only.

Where does the training take place?

Brain training is done at the user’s home, in school, our office or at work. The programs are web-based and compatible on any computer that supports Flash. The initial interview, start-up meeting, and weekly calls from the clinican can all be done over the phone.

How do I know this will help me or my child?

In our research and in the practical experience, 80% of clients see measurable improvements. We make all attempts to make sure your/your child’s profile is right for training. That does not mean you can be sure to get results. No intervention works for everyone. 80% is a number we are proud of, but we cannot provide guarantees in any particular case.

How long will it take to see results?

The minimum period required differs for each client, and considers factors such as clients with challenging diagnosis. Older students and those looking to boost skills rather than remediation take less time. Our period of service ranges from 2-12 months, with most clients averaging 4-6 months.

Do you offer payment plans?

Yes we offer payment options to make our programs more affordable.
